Burnet's defense was once again smoothering as they shutout the Manor Mustangs 41-0 on Friday night. Pictured above Spencer Thurman picks up and plants the option man for a six yard loss.
Friday night marked the first ever game played on Manor’s new high school football field but it won’t be one that the Mustangs will look back at fondly as the Dawgs whipped their host 41-0. After the two teams traded punts on their first series Burnet’s Aaron Thomas came up with the first big play of the evening picking off a pass at the Manor 31 and returning it 11 yards. One play later the Dawgs would put seven on the board with a Dillon Chafin pass to Brandon Jacque followed by a Clark PAT.
The Dawgs only needed to run two more offensive plays on their next series as Chafin hooked up with Spencer Thurman. Clark’s kick made it 14-0 with 4:44 left in the first.
Justin Battles picked off a Stangs pass in the end zone to give Burnet possession and several plays later with 4:25 left in the half Chafin found Stephen Young in the end zone for a score. Clark PAT was true, 21-0 Burnet and that would be the halftime score as well.
The Dawgs defense continued to click in the second half and Manor found trouble everywhere they looked. Burnet forced the Stangs into fourth and long situations on numerous occasions and created turnovers to end other drives.
The offense also kept things going strong and added to their total early in the third. Jathan Craig helped set up this Burnet score with 48-yards rushing on four carries pushing the Dawgs to the 20-yard line. Chafin and Josh Barrera sealed the deal with a 22-yard throw and catch, and after Clark’s kick it was 28-0 Burnet.
The Bulldogs added another score on the first play of the fourth quarter when Zac Maldonado turned loose for a 44-yard touchdown run down the Manor sideline to put Burnet up 34-0.
Manor’s final drive of the game started with 9:55 on the clock and lasted 17 plays while taking the clock all the way down to the 38 second mark, but this drive too ended in the Dawgs favor as a speedy Justin Battles picked up a Mustang fumble and sprinted 80 plus yards for a Burnet score. Clarks PAT put the final point on the board as Burnet advanced to 2-1 with a 41-0 win over Manor. The Dawgs will open district play next Friday as they travel to Wimberley.
