Burnet zealously guards and protects its heritage and rural lifestyle while preparing for and embracing the growth coming as the Austin spillover approaches from the east and more people discover the charm and allure of the Highland Lakes region.
Burnet remains the kind of Texas town where you can still drop by the local newspaper to show off the fish you caught and replay Friday night's high school football game with someone you meet on the sidewalk.
Its people are friendly and they're proud of this town, which began life in 1849 as Hamilton Valley, just across the creek from an Army outpost.
Today, Fort Croghan is preserved as a museum with several restored buildings and annual re-enactments of frontier life. Just to the east, business is still done in buildings that have occupied the Burnet County Courthouse square for more than a century, guests sleep at a bed and breakfast once a stage stop, and restored steam engines chug into the train depot each weekend.
Excellent public schools and a Seton hospital are among outstanding community facilities, which also include a public golf course and a recreation center offering everything from games and swimming to fitness programs.
Its airport serves private aviators and is the base for the Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, whose vintage air show is one of the year's big events along with the Bluebonnet Festival and the fair and rodeo.
Although the Austin metropolis is creeping nearer, optimists believe it won't disturb Burnet's small-town values centered on family life, schools, church, and civic activities.
By the way, it's pronounced BURN-it, not Burr-NET!
