Basketball follows a simple form: get a good big man and little man who can handle the ball. Think Kareem and Magic. Russell and Cousy. Shaq and Kobe.
Burnet (12-8) used this classic approach in downing Llano 49-26 to go 2-0 in District 8-3A play. Llano is 0-2 and 13-11.
Junior 6-7 center Clayton Baumgart and junior 5-6 guard Colton Stevans teamed early and often to the visiting Bulldogs a quick lead. Then Llano went ice-cold, scoring one basketball in 11 attempts in the second and early quarter before Yellow Jacket Chance Ware ended the drought with a pair of free throws.
But Burnet led 28-11 by then after going on a 16-2 run.
The second half was more-or-less evenly played – a battle of full-court presses with plenty of action even if the issue had long since been decided.
