Dawgs take second place in 8-3A

The Burnet Bulldogs defeated the Lampasas Badgers on the road Friday night 42-28. The win moves the Dawgs district record to 3-2 and will have Burnet entering the playoffs as the second place team, first big school representative. A 40-38 Llano win over Brownwood on Friday night will have the Lions facing Stephenville in round one while the Bulldogs draw Alvarado for Bi-District action. Liberty Hill defeated Gatesville to finish as the 8-3A district champs with a perfect record and Llano will also enter the playoffs as a small school representative.
The Bulldog jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the game’s first drive with a Brock Foster six-yard touchdown run which was set-up by a couple of first down connections between Derek Kiser and Blayne Parisher. The Badgers quickly answered and when the first drew to a close it was a tied game at 7-7.
With 1:38 left in the half the Badgers scored on a four-yard run and after the successful PAT it was Lampasas on top, 14-7.
A determined Bulldog team answered in just 35 seconds. Two more lengthy connections between Kiser and Parisher set Burnet up at the Lampasas 20. Kiser dropped back once again this time finding Darius Johnson for the tying scoring after Huff’s PAT, 14-14.
With 55 seconds on the clock on a second and seven from their own 28 a Badger back busted loose and was eventually stopped short of the goal line by Jamal Brown. After a penalty Lampasas cashed in a eight-yard score. Jeremy Ayers blocked the PAT which made the score 20-14 Badgers at the break.
On Burnet’s second possession of the third quarter one Trenton Hafley run followed by two Foster runs resulted in a seven-yard score for Foster. With 4:35 left in the third Huff split the poles putting the Dawgs on top 21-20 which was also the score at the end of the period.
Foster returned to the end zone with 9:58 left in the fourth and after Huff’s kick it was Bulldogs 28-20. Just five seconds later Foster dashed into the end zone again on play one following an botched kickoff recovery by Jake McElroy. Huff added the PAT putting the Dawgs on top, 35-20.
Foster wasn’t quite done, on third and eight from the Lampasas 16 Kiser found the speedy sophomore and he once again trotted to the end zone for his fifth score of the night. Huff made good on the PAT putting Burnet up 42-20.
