The Burnet Bulldogs earned a Bi-District Championship with a 41-14 victory over Alvarado on Friday night in Belton. The Dawgs seemed to be clicking in every area of the game with some solid hits on defense, outstanding catches, and great special teams play.
The Indians scored the game’s first points on a six-yard touchdown run with 7:23 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
Burnet answered on their very next drive with a 35-yard Austin Huff field goal to make it 7-3 with 4:27 left in the first.
The Dawgs took their first lead of the night with just over a minute left in the first on a 43-yard Derek Kiser to Trenton Hafley connection. Huff hit the PAT and the first ended with the Dawgs on top, 10-7.
The second quarter belonged to the Bulldogs. Following a devastating hit by Jamal Brown that caused a fumble Burnet marched downfield in eight plays and scored on a 10-yard screen pass from Kiser to Cody Jones. Huff’s PAT made it 17-7 with 8:43 left in the first half.
Taylor Barksdale and Kody Hall forced the Indians three and out and it only took two plays for Burnet to return to the endzone. On a second and 10 from their own 43 Kiser found Jones who did the rest and after Huff’s kick the Dawgs led 24-7 with 6:43 left in the half.
On the very next play the defense was at it again. This time Cutter Dewbre caused the fumble and Jamal Brown scooped it up putting Burnet’s offense back on the field. Just four plays later Burnet cashed in the opportunity for six-points on a Kiser to Foster 29-yard touchdown connection. Huff added another mark on the board giving Burnet a 31-7 lead.
Before the half ended Huff kicked through a 36-yard field goal to make it 34-7 at the break.
The Indians took the opening kickoff of the second half and put together a 20-play drive that consumed most of the third quarter. They scored on a second and goal from three yards out, 34-14.
With 2:04 left in the third the Dawgs added to their total with a 59-yard touchdown between Kiser and Brock Foster. Huff hit the PAT to make it 41-14 which was eventually the final.
The Dawgs will now face Kennedale, who beat Burkburnett 57-28 on Friday. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Waco ISD Sports Complex. Liberty Hill will also advance in the playoffs after knocking off Hillsboro. Llano and Brownwood were both defeated in Bi-District play.
