The Bulldogs spoiled Canyon Lake’s homecoming Friday night by defeating the Hawks 34-7. The skies busted loose just before kick-off and it was non-stop rain throughout the entire first half of play and all of halftime.
Burnet only had possession of the ball three times in the first half. After holding the Hawks the Dawg’s first drive lasted 12-plays and was capped by a Derek Kiser to Brock Foster 9-yard touchdown. With 5:42 left in the first Austin Huff added the PAT to put Burnet on top, 7-0.
Canyon Lake responded with a clocking draining 10-play drive that resulted in a 7-yard rushing score. The PAT tied things up at 7-7 just before the start of the second quarter.
The Dawgs came-up short on a fourth and 10 during their next drive turning the ball over on downs. The Hawks rattled off 13-plays before coming up short on a fourth and 16 which gave the Dawgs their third possession with just over three minutes left in the half.
Burnet took advantage of the opportunity with some nice running by Trenton Hafley and catches by Blayne Parisher. On third and 10 from the Canyon Lake 37 Kiser found a streaking Cody Jones and hit him in stride for the score. The PAT was no good making it 13-7.
In just over a minute Canyon Lake drove to the Burnet 13-yard line but faced with very little time and a third and 11 they elected to try the field goal. Jeremy Ayers put a stop to that threat as he broke around the end and blocked the kick sending the game into the half.
Burnet received the second-half kick-off but failed to convert a fourth down attempt turning the ball over on downs.
Hunter Thomas, Chase Mardis, Kody Jones, Cameron Chafin, Lance Armentrout and Eric Walker all got in on the defensive action in this series and Burnet soon had the ball back following a punt.
It took nine plays this time but on the heels of Kiser and Hafley the Bulldogs pushed to the Hawk 33. One snap later it was a Kiser to Parisher connection followed by a Foster two-point catch that had the Dawgs leading, 21-7.
On a fourth down play at the very end of the third quarter Hall, Austin Cox, and Walker dropped an attempted Hawk runner giving Burnet the ball to start the fourth quarter.
With 10:46 in the fourth Foster swept around the right side for his second score of the night. The PAT failed, 27-7.
Burnet returned to the end zone one more time on a 42-yard pass from Kiser to Jones. Campbell tacked on the PAT giving Burnet a 34-7 lead which was eventually the final.
